During "Exit", Bono explains the song is about "a religious man who became a very dangerous man when he failed to work out the hands of love," and then adds, "You could call him Ian Paisley[Irish politician], yeah...sure! You can put anyone you like in that spot, put me in the spot!" During "Maggie's Farm", Bono says, "You've got a few days to make up your mind. We sing songs about our country being divided. Bono introduces "Bad" and claims that "Micheal Jackson ripped me off, man! Now who's bad?" he mocks. Bono adds the first verse to Yeats' "September 1913" to the end of "Love is Blindness" : "What need you, being come to sense/ Having a finger in the till and adding the halfpence to the pence/ And a prayer to shivering prayer/ Till you drive the marrow from the bone/ Romantic Ireland's dead and gone/ It's with O'Leary in the grave..." Bono in Dublin: Dismissing reports about a Live Aid II - billions, not millions to aid Africa - June 1, 2004 - Dublin - Charity will not solve the problems of African poverty, was the message Bono delivered to EU development ministers in Dublin (June 1, 2004). And in an open letter to UK PM Tony Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown, Bono has joined a group of celebrities demanding an increase in aid to the poorest countries. Actors Jude Law and Helen Mirren were among more than 20 stars to sign the letter, which lists the problems faced by the world's poor and asks the UK to donate 0.7% of its income to help. Read the letter, here. Speaking in Dublin Bono said that charity is no longer enough because Africa is "bursting into flames". "We are after billions, not millions - and that's what it's going to take to sort out the problems of our next door neighbour. "There's a general feeling in some camps that because they are doing well their economies can't afford the commitment of 0.7% and it's going to be more money than they thought. "A lot of these people are doing some great things, but there are promises being broken and that's unacceptable." Dismissing reports that a Live Aid II is being planned, he said "there's an emergency going on and for me it's not really about charity at this point, it's about justice." He said he did not want to see again the shocking images from Africa that were beamed around the world 20 years ago. "There are plans being discussed here today that would mean we wouldn't have to see those awful pictures again," he added. "There are bureaucratic bottle-necks going on. People have pledged 14 billion dollars to the EU but the EU haven't found a way of spending it. "At a time when 6,500 Africans are dying every day of AIDS that's not the Europe I want to be in."

U2 is working on Morocco - Bono sings the praises of President Bush, new AIDS spending - may 30, 2007 - USA TODAY's Susan Page just got off the telephone with Bono. She says President Bush can count the rock star as a fan today. The Grammy winner was singing the praises of the American president for his announcement today that he would propose spending an additional $30 billion over five years to fight AIDS in Africa, doubling the U.S. commitment. “Some of my activist friends will be, you know, jumping on one leg rather than jumping on two because it’s never enough, and etc., etc.,” Bono said in a telephone interview from Fez, Morocco, where he’s recording with his band, U2. “But I am sorry, I’m standing up and I’m applauding the president and Congress.” Since 1999, the Irish-born singer has become increasingly active in raising awareness of AIDS in Africa and campaigning for debt relief in the developing world. He is co-founder of an advocacy group called DATA — an acroynym for Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa. “I remember people literally laughing in our face as we walked around Capitol Hill, knocking on doors and drumming up support on this,” he said. He cited help from key members of Congress, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and said it was notable that “a conservative administration” was delivering on promises of aid. The Bush announcement also will help press leaders meeting at next week’s G-8 summit in Germany to act, he said. Bono already has met with seven of the 2008 presidential contenders — including Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and Republicans Rudy Giuliani and John McCain — to discuss the issue with them. He did note some disappointments with the U.S. program, including the fact that little of the money is used to finance multilateral AIDS programs. The United States also requires that some funds go to abstinence education. “Condoms are a part of the solution; they just are,” he said. “At a time when there’s very little good news coming in from foreign climes, this is great news,” he added. “And I wish I could get the smile off the face and give you more of an activist’s scowl. But how can you?” source: usatoday

Bono and O'Neill are shocked by what they are told and see. Bono says "I am speechless," while Secretary O'Neill -- whose voice is described as 'quivering' by reporters in attendance -- says "This whole business about having so much money...and it not going primarily to treatment is just a stunning revelation. Before we ask for more money, for God's sake what are we doing with what we've got?" Later, the pair traveled to a housing project in Soweto, where Bono is greeted by schoolchildren singing along to U2's 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For.' Geils Band singer Peter Wolf is namechecked during 'Beautiful Day', and '40' is dedicated to Teresa Earnhardt, widow of racing legend Dale Earnhardt, who is presumably at the show. My Sweet Lord at the end of Mysterious Ways. Larry had to run on the catwalk to get back for Yahweh, like he had forgotten or something lol. He's a fast runner too. And the Edge - in seemingly high spirits - let it rip with a welcome bit of mischief in his solos that made them even more piercing than usual, especially the raw-nerve ending jangle of ``Bullet the Blue Sky.'' ...(Clearly more people have cell phones now than lighters.). Larry is amazing. During Electric Co he broke both drumstick, tossed them behind him picked up 2 more in less then a 100th of a second and did not miss a beat. Toward the end of the evening, Bono said with a heartfelt sigh, ``It's nice to be home.'' Earlier on Tuesday Bono turned up for a book signing at Barnes and Noble in Boston....

25th 'VERTIGO' show - may 22, 2005 - Philadelphia, Wachovia Center - Edge was awesome / like in romance movies (Bono and the girl) / tatoo guy! 'We've had a great past in this band but the thing that excites us most is the future,' raps Bono as the song closes. 'What it holds in science and technology and the idea that the world can change shape and be better. We believe God is inspiring scientists and doctors and nurses, we met someone today at the airport and this is for the little baby she is carrying - this is Miracle Drug.'....Edge, meanwhile, is flailing his guitar to a thrilling climax....Human rights is still the theme as Pride In The Name of Love gives way to Where The Streets Have No Name and One - this time, as every night, the human rights in question are those of the people of Africa, living in poverty. Edge was awesome! A young girl, whose parents brought her to the show for her 16TH birthday. Bono iater pulled her up on stage as she danced to Mysterious Ways and he then sang With or Without You to her and had her run around the circle to his waiting arms on the other side, he then sat her down and completed the song having her rise as she sang the end of it with him. Like in romance movies! Earlier in the show he got tatoo guy on stage. Later he took someone's camera and took photos for them. Gloria ..In the solo part, Bono introduced Edge as "The" (his first name, right??)...". Some photos on: U2tours

The paintings and drawings in the exhibit were created by survivors of the two atomic blasts(Hiroshima and Nagasaki) that ended World War II. Another part of the museum displays the theme of Dr. Martin Luther King's non-violent struggle for racial equality in the United States. The band are very moved by the exhibits and after the "War" tour ends, donate some of the backdrop of the stage, and a white flag to a new exhibit in the Museum called "Give Peace A Chance". Support for the gig is "Dream Syndicate".

"ZOOTV" tour - may 21, 1992 U2 perform in Milan, Italy at the Forum Di Assago. The shows are originally planned for May 20, and 21 but are rescheduled when one of the tour trucks breaks down. Attempts to fly the trucks' contents in do not materialize, and the show is rescheduled for the 21st. At the first night's show, Fatima Mansions are booed, and at one point the "40" chant of "How long to sing this song," is loud enough to drown out the audio system. U2's performance is greeted wildly. Before "One", Bono refers to the 1990 World Cup Quarter-Final in which Italy beat Ireland 1-nil. "We forgive you that you were lucky," Bono jokes. During "Trying To Throw Your Arms Around The World", a girl has already climbed up onto the barrier between the crowd and stage -- Bono pulls her up, opens the bottle of champagne and sprays the nearby crowd. She whispers something to him, and Bono walks her over to the main stage and explains to The Edge, "It's you she loves..." Together the two of them alternate singing, "Woman, I will..." to her, as they argue over who will end up with her tonight. Support is B.P. Fallon and "Fatima Mansions".

"Bono and Larry pay tribute to Irish TV legend Gay Byrne" - may 21, 1999. Bono urges action on corruption in Africa - may 21, 2006 - Nigeria - The west's new mood of generosity towards Africa will come to an abrupt and early end unless political leaders in the world's poorest continent are ruthless in eliminating corruption, the rock star Bono said last night. ... "It's a critical moment", Bono said. "There's some goodwill. There's a window of opportunity. But it could close if corruption is not tackled." ... "To counter that argument, I say that those were loans in the past not grants. It was for cold war reasons that they were made. It was cold war reasoning that meant billions got lost in Swiss bank accounts. Judgement of character came second to national interest," Bono said. ... "Donors are becoming more careful who they give increased aid flows to," Bono said. "That kind of auditing is necessary because transparency demands it. We have to accept that a lot of the aid in the past has done more harm than good."
May 20: crowd out of hand / show is scheduled / Kansas' video day 2 / HAPPY B-DAY JOHN ABRAHAM / Bono In Africa With US Treasury Secretary / Bono in Nigeria: Travelling star keeps up pressure on aid and debt for Africa !

"War" tour - may 20, 1983. U2 perform in Detroit, Michigan at the Grand Circus Theater. Bono stops "I Fall Down" because the crowd is getting out of hand. Support is "Dream Syndicate".

"ZOOTV" tour - may 20, 1992 A show is scheduled for Milan, Italy at the Forum Di Assago. However, because one of the tour trucks has broken down in Barcelona, and attempts to fly the contents in fail, the show is cancelled. A crowd of 12,500 wait in the rain outside the venue, and at 8 pm, one hour after the doors were scheduled to be opened, rumours circulate in the crowd that the show will not go on. Riot police are called in to stand between the crowd and the venue doors. An official from the venue finally announces that the concert has been rescheduled, and the crowd leave without incident.

"Day 2 - U2 record video in Kansas City" - may 20, 1997. U2 wraps up filming of the "Last Night on Earth" video in Kansas City.

"John Abraham - Bono and Ali have their 4th child, a boy" - may 20, 2001. Bono and Ali give birth to their 4th child, a boy, in Dublin. Bono tells reporters the next day that the boy hasn't been named yet. The child is born on schedule, during an 8-day break in the Elevation Tour. His name is later revealed to be John Abraham.

Bono In Africa With US Treasury Secretary - may 20, 2002 - For two weeks Bono travels to four African countries with the US Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill. The self-described 'odd couple' of international aid diplomacy flew first to Ghana before travelling on to South Africa, Uganda and Ethiopia. The plan, hatched during meetings in Washington, is to draw attention to the needs of the poverty-stricken region, using their different positions and celebrity to spark interest in a topic that each feels much of the world ignores. U2.com

Bono in Nigeria: Travelling star keeps up pressure on aid and debt for Africa - may 20, 2006 - ...The U2 singer arrives today in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, having already visited Lesotho, Rwanda and Tanzania to highlight the benefits of his Product RED campaign. But the tour was almost aborted before it began. Fresh from his day in the editor's chair on Monday, Bono flew to Johannesburg, but he was initially barred from entering South Africa. The reason: so extensively has he been travelling the world to whip up support for debt relief, increased aid and fairer trade terms for Africa, he didn't have a blank page left in his passport. A quick call to Nelson Mandela solved the problem, and the rock star and his entourage were waved through. ... "When people work, and they can buy their own food and take themselves to the clinics, then it means they are doing it themselves and they are not just receiving food parcels." ... "The reason Lesotho has not received debt cancellation is because it has been disciplined, it has been punished for the fact that it has been a good borrower in the past and has paid back its debts." ... "They welcomed us with open arms ... shook our hands and their eyes misted up at the right place. When we left town, they slashed the budget." ... independent

"ZOOTV - Zooropa" tour - may 19, 1993. U2 perform in Oviedo, Spain at the Estadio Carlos Tartier.

"Last Night On Earth" - may 19, 1997: Day 1 - U2 record video in Kansas City. U2 spends two days in Kansas City, Missouri, shooting the video for their next single, "Last Night On Earth." Traffic in and around the city is tied up both days, as U2 is permitted to close streets while the video is shot. Local residents are angered by the delays. The video is a send-up of 50s and 60s sci-fi movies and beatnik poet Alan Ginsburg appears at the end of the video pushing a shopping cart with a spotlight in the basket. It is one of Ginsburg's final public appearances, as he would die later in 1997.

"Yes" - may 19, 1998. U2 performs at YES concert for Good Friday Agreement. U2 participates in a "YES" concert in Belfast to draw support for the national vote on the Good Friday/Northern Ireland Peace Agreement four days later. Northern band Ash also plays at the show at Waterfront Hall in front of about 2,000 young people, and Ash's lead singer comes on-stage with U2 at one point. More importantly, U2 brings on stage David Trimble and John Hume, leaders of the traditionally opposing Ulster Unionist Party and Social Democratic and Labour Party, respectively. The political leaders stand on each side of Bono as he raises their arms together in a show of unity. Four days later, the Peace Agreement is approved overwhelmingly by voters in both the North and South.

"Bono interviews Gorbachev" - may 19, 2003 - Bono is in Turin, Italy, for the World Political Forum -- an event organized in part by Mikhail Gorbachev. While in Italy, Bono interviews the former Soviet president and plans are in place to sell the interview to international TV news networks with the money going to charity.

Bono implores media not to 'dehumanise' Africa - may 19, 2006 - U2 rocker Bono has made a fervent plea to the world's media not to 'dehumanise' Africa by always displaying its people as 'supplicants'....now needed to show the African people not as 'supplicants' but as 'noble, entrepreneurial, very handsome, beautiful, smart' people. "The thing I'm learning is breaking with cliches. We see this pattern of Africans displayed as supplicants. We need to start portraying Africans as noble, entrepreneurial, very handsome, beautiful, smart. Break the cliches. As people dehumanise African people it's very easy to turn away from them," Ratethemusic quoted him, as saying.

U2 goes 3D and rocks Cannes - May 19, 2007 - Irish band U2 rocked the Cannes Film Festival early on Sunday with a short live set on the famous red carpet on their way into the main cinema for the premiere of a new film "U2 3D". One of the world's biggest rock acts, U2's gig attracted hundreds of fans who crammed around the VIP entrance to the Grand Theatre Lumiere to hear Bono belt out "Vertigo" and "Where the Streets Have No Name". U2 have just performed on the steps of the Grand Théâtre Lumière at the Palais des Festival in Cannes. This is the first time the band has performed live since the last gig of the Vertigo Tour in Honolulu on 9 December 2006. In a throwback to the tour, The Arcade Fire's Wake Up was played as the band walked up the red carpet, and then U2 performed a brief set. It was: 1. Vertigo / Ca Plane Pour Moi (snippet) / 2. Where The Streets Have No Name / All You Need Is Love (snippet) - Bono made a number of comments in French, including the count-in to Vertigo and a short speech during Streets' intro. This set is notable as one of the extremely few times that Streets has been performed outside of a full tour concert. This has only occurred twice before: the first instance was the very first time it was publicly performed, at its video shoot in Los Angeles on 27 March 1987, and the second instance took place on 3 February 2002 when U2 performed the Super Bowl's half-time show.

MAY 18: text images in Spanish / 'Staring at the Sun' / Bono stumps on Capitol Hill for AIDS funding / 23rd VERTIGO show / In Rwanda, U2's Bono denounces 'dehumanization' of Africans!

"ZOOTV - Zooropa" - may 18, 1992. U2 perform in Barcelona, Spain at Palau Sant Jordi. At the second of two shows in Barcelona, Spain, many of the text images shown during "The Fly" are translated into Spanish. Translations will also be done for later shows in Italy and Germany.

"Staring At The Sun" - may 18, 1998. U2 win an ASCAP award for "Staring at the Sun" for one of the Most Performed Songs.

"Bono stumps on Capitol Hill for AIDS funding" - may 18, 2004. Bono takes the case for increased funding to fight AIDS and poverty in Africa to Capitol Hill, where he speaks before the Senate Appropriations Committee. The hearing is not without incident. According to Reuters, "several protestors calling for more global availability of generic AIDS medicines disrupted the hearing and were ejected as the U.S.'s global AIDS coordinator Randall Tobias made remarks."

23rd 'VERTIGO' show - may 18, 2005 - E. Rutherford, NJ - Continental Airlines Arena - Kings of Leon - premiere of 'ISHFWILF' played with The Bank Robbers (Edge plays an acoustic) / Edge´s killer version of ABOY / Elvis Costello, Sammy Hagar and Joe McEnroe were in the audience / "Bad-40" finished the show! Bono sings a bit of 'Pump It Up' for Elvis Costello, who is in the building tonight. 'I Still Haven't Found...' is performed with a local band, The Bank Robbers, on stage. Members of that band borrow U2's instruments to perform the song, though the drummer uses Larry's tom from 'Love and Peace...", not the main drum kit. Additional celebrity sightings: Sammy Hagar, John McEnroe. Elevation - It was refreshing to see Larry sing along w/o a mic, just singing and enjoying himself. Gloria - Bono said "this song is off of out first album, no, wait, our second album". The Ocean - Lyrics were changed to incorporate "The Jersey Shore" and "The Atlantic Ocean"...Miracle Drug - dedicated to a friend of the bands' sick infant. Bono also praised doctors and nurses (especially nurses because they don't get paid enough). Running to Stand Still - Was suprisingly georgous, complete w/ Edge on piano and Bono w/ harmonica. The Fly - Edge went f---ng bananas in this song. He was dancing and just ripping the guitar to shreads. It sounded like an angry man letting out all of his frustrations through musical notes. Mysterious Ways (Mysterious Ways, Bono changed the line towards the end of the song "She Moves w/ it" and changed it to "He's Handsome"....as he was huggin Adam Clayton) - great crowd reaction. Bono brought up a girl to dance. All Beacsue of You - AWESOME live. Edge is a madman. He has never sounded better. Killer version. ...ISHFWILF - Bono brought up 3 YOUNG guys (maybe early 20s), to play a song w/ them. Turns out to be ISHFWILF. These guys sung into same mic w/ Bono, playing distorted guitar version, hamming it up w/ the crowd. They called themselves the Bank Robbers. Larry went to a much quicker pace to keep up w/ them and the song turned into a punk version The Bank Robbers didn't want to leave the stage. It was quite a scene. Edge is in his prime. He is loving being out there, he's dancing, and is playing the guitar like a man possessed. Adam's smile never left his face. Larry was singing along, playing keboards etc. Bank Robbers say about the show here. Some photos: interference

In Rwanda, U2's Bono denounces 'dehumanization' of Africans - May 18, 2006 - Irish rock star and activist Bono decried western portrayals of Africans as "dehumanizing" and urged greater efforts to battle poverty and disease on the continent...."The thing I'm learning is breaking with cliches," he said. "We see this pattern of Africans displayed as supplicants. We need to start portraying Africans as noble, entrepreneurial, very handsome, beautiful, smart. "Break the cliches," Bono told a crowd at the school in Mayange. "As people dehumanize African people it's very easy to turn away from them."..."I come from a culture where people think that pop stars and rock stars are heroes, which is preposterous," he said. "The hospital workers here should be the heroes." Read more: here

MAY 17: not a Duran Duran concert / Self Aid Festival / from Sydney is released / Edge attends Radiohead / 22nd VERTIGO show / Bono began a new African tour in Lesotho!

"War" tour - may 17, 1983. U2 perform in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at Massey Hall. During the encore, four girls jump on stage and mob Bono. Bono mumbles something about "not being at a Duran Duran concert". Bono dances with two of the girls at a time, and lets them take pictures. Support is "Dream Syndicate".

"Self Aid Festival" - may 17, 1986. U2 play their only European date of 1986 at the Self Aid festival in the RDS Showgrounds, Dublin. With 27 separate acts performing it's the largest Irish musical festival ever. Much controversy is generated when In Dublin magazine runs a highly critical story entitled "The Great Self Aid Farce - Rock Against the People", using a shot of Bono on the cover. The criticism is levelled at the concert organizers who are accused of whoring the unemployed for financial gain. Most acts are limited to 15 minute performances, except the last five: Rory Gallagher, Christy Moore, Elvis Costello(and The Attractions), Chris Deburgh and the headliner U2. U2 make their entrance while The Edge thrills the crowd with an extended guitar solo from Eddie Cochran's "C'Mon Everybody". The band play 4 other songs, "Pride(In the Name of Love)", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Maggie's Farm" and "Bad". During "Maggie's Farm", Bono changes the lyrics to reflect the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl: "Temperature is rising, the fever is high; I can't see the future., when they're screwing up the sky. The water is heavy, and so is my head. I don't live in Chernobyl, instead I live in Sellafield..." "Bad" is the encore for the show, selected by the audience when Bono asks for requests.

"U2 releases Sydney home video" - may 17, 1994. U2 releases a home video version of the Sydney pay-per-view concert taped last November 27th. "Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World" is edited out amongst great speculation -- possibilities suggest the edit allows the concert to fit on one 2-hour VHS tape, or that the female dancer didn't agree to appear in the home release, or that she was underage and drank champagne on stage with Bono.

"Edge catches Radiohead" - may 17, 2003. NME reports that The Edge is in attendance as Radiohead plays a club gig in Dublin tonight.

22nd 'VERTIGO' show - may 17, 2005 - E. Rutherford, NJ - Continental Airlines Arena - Kings of Leon - 8 songs to the encores / "Vertigo" ends after "40" / Bono hugged Edge during the start of the Who-ish blast "All Because of You" (Bono stopped him - he made an announcement that sometimes guitar players are too fast). The band was incredible today. Bono got into it round the time he took the little girl up on the extended stage, and there was no looking back. His comments for Vertigo the second time round were great...something to the effect of..."you know encores are an italian opera thing...and if they like a song, they say encore and you do it again...I think you guys liked this song the first time round...but what do i know? I'm Irish!..."Vertigo! so cool!!!! Bono grabs the spotlight that he uses at the end of 40 and just starts going nuts...another memorable moment: Bono added a short snippet of "please" into BTBS, right before the "johnny comes marching home" part. Such a great way to end what was a very energetic show. Some photos on: interference

Bono began a new African tour in Lesotho - May 17, 2006 - Bono began a new African tour in Lesotho and will unveil a new initiative to fight Aids in the country's ailing textile industry. "In a small African country, the three issues - debt, aid and trade - come together in an unholy trinity," the U2 frontman said yesterday, as his plane landed in the capital Maseru with a delegation of activists and private sector executives. Bono has billed this as "Measuring Success and Promises Kept" to highlight the progress in the treatment of HIV/Aids in Africa, the search for economic growth and rich nations' pledges to cancel some debts and more than double aid to the continent by 2010...Bono is due to announce a new initiative to fight HIV/Aids in Lesotho's textile and garment industry with US clothing maker Gap Inc. Gap is contributing 50% of its profits from the sale of Gap Red products to a global fund for Aids in Africa and has committed to make some of the Red products in Africa. The Apparel Lesotho Alliance to Fight Aids project will ensure workers have access to free drug therapy. Read more, here

"The Joshua Tree" tour - may 16, 1987 - East Rutherford - NJ - Brenden Byrne Arena. "ZOOTV" tour - may 16, 1992. U2 perform in Barcelona, Spain at the Palau Sant Jordi. The first nights concert is marred by a strange sequence of events. The leftmost side of seats in front of the stage are reserved from Alison Hewson, Ann, Aislinn and other VIPs and guests. The Spanish crowd ignore the reserved signs and tape and pour into the area. Security intervenes just as the lights dim and the show starts. It is apparent from the crowd's reaction that the majority have not heard about ZooTV, and are completely speechless upon their first glimpse of the new U2. During the B-stage set, a large amount of water rains down on Bono, who turns angrily and walks over to confront the individual. Bono grabs the audience member's can and throws it angrily on the ground. Bono walks over to the audience expecting to find sympathy, but instead finds people screaming his name. Realizing that the crowd is getting out of hand, the band cut the performance short by two songs. Support is B.P. Fallon and "Fatima Mansions".

A crowd of about 4,000 are on hand and they hear music, dance, prayer and speeches by a diverse group of activists, including NBA star Dikembe Mutombo, Grammy-winning Christian musician Michael W. Smith. Near the end of the event, Bono recalls the Zoo TV era by calling Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter from the podium, but only gets through to the Senator's answering machine. "Hello, Senator Specter? This is Bono, and I'm here with a few thousand friends and we need to talk to you."
